Founded in 1879, St. Joseph's Hospital is a general acute care tertiary, teaching hospital licensed for 595 beds. It is the second largest private hospital in Milwaukee and serves as a referral and tertiary care center for southeastern and eastern Wisconsin. The facility is recognized throughout southeastern Wisconsin for its clinical excellence in women's and families' services, including obstetrical and neonatology care, as well as in cardiac, cancer and
physical rehabilitation services. It also offers a full spectrum of surgical and emergency services.
The hospital admits approximately 24,000 on an inpatient basis annually, has 2,700 employees and a medical staff of over 700. Delivering nearly 4,000 babies each year, St. Joseph's operates the largest prenatal center in Wisconsin, including a Level III, 49-bed NICU, which serves 700 infants each year. Twenty-five hospitals throughout eastern Wisconsin transfer their sickest mothers and infants to St. Joseph's.
St. Joseph's also operates the largest and most experienced program in Wisconsin to treat prostate cancer with radiation seed implant therapy. It has also gained notoriety as a national pioneer in cybersurgery, broadcasting medical procedures on the Internet live from its campus. In addition, St. Joseph's sponsors a variety of educational
opportunities to offer support and information to the community. Programs and services are planned to fill the physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of all of patients from premature infants to the elderly.
